Grateful for the Work-Study Program on Huxi Campus, students aspire to make Huxi a more beautiful place. On the afternoon of April 16th, 2015, voluntary work at the Botanical Garden was organized by the Student Affairs Office of the Management Committee on Huxi Campus and around 40 work-study students took part in this activity voluntarily. Wang Yuhong, Vice Secretary of the Party Working Committee on Huxi Campus and Director of Student Affairs Office of Management Committee, and teachers from the Student Affairs Office of the Management Committee together with teachers related to the Botanical Garden affairs joined this activity.
“There are 22 organizations where students can take a part-time job while studying on Huxi Campus and 560 students have joined this big family. By organizing this activity, the communication and understanding among students can be better promoted and a harmonious working environment can be created. At the same time, students can get to know the Botanical Garden better and devote more effort to Huxi Campus building and construction,” according to Zhou Hongyao, the teacher who is charge of work-study program at the Student Affairs Office. And then, a teacher with the Botanical Garden made a brief introduction about the construction situation of the Botanical Garden to everyone present.
The volunteer work was carried out in three groups. For the first group, they cleaned the name-plates of those plants and did some maintenance work in the ornamental plants area under the instruction of the botanical garden teacher. Everyone paid great attention to scrubbing those name-plates and weeding around those precious plants, as if they would scare those flowers in full blossom if they hadn’t acted like that. “What a gorgeous rose!”, “What’s this purple flower?” Students couldn’t help exclaiming with excitement and surprise every now and then. Besides, there came four students from the School of Construction Management and Real Estate who are not members of the work-study program for the voluntary work. “We came because we saw the notice and we’d like to know more plants. In addition, we can make new friends as we enjoy being close to nature,” according to one girl.
The second group went to the lawn in front of the First Experiment Building and their task was to weed there. Under the instruction of professional staff, they learned how to do the work quickly and they finished their work all together as they became more and more skilled. Shu Tianqi, a participating student, said that he joined this activity voluntarily. Through this activity he came to understand how hard the gardeners’ work is and got to know more about work-study programs and more importantly, he did what he could for the Botanical Garden.
The third group went to weed in the woods. One boy student said that he is a sophomore and he has taken part in lots of such activities organized by the Huxi Campus, and he is a member of the work-study program.
After more than one hour’s effort, the voluntary work at the Botanical Garden was done successfully. The communication and friendship among the 22 students got promoted through their joint work in helping campus building and construction and their understanding towards work-study program was deepened.
In order to know students’ understanding of the work-study program, what they need from the work-study program and what suggestions they have for the work-study program, the Student Affairs Office of Management Committee on Huxi Campus handed out questionnaires to students in work-study program and the Office hoped to provide a better service in future according to students’ needs and suggestions.
