A free-bicycle handing out ceremony was held at the South Square in front of the First Dining Hall on Huxi Campus at noon, April 29th, 2015. It was the fourth event of its kind and one hundred bicycles were handed out. Tian Ming,  Professor Xia Zhining, and others attended the ceremony.
These free bicycles were collected from students who have moved to other campuses or students who have already graduated from CQU without taking their bicycles with them. They had been repaired and repainted by staff from the Huxi Campus Management Committee and the Campus Security Office to ensure basic functions and safety. Free bicycles have been handed out on Huxi Campus for three consecutive years since 2012, and each year 100 bicycles are allocated according to the size of dormitory community. So far, 400 bicycles have been handed out. Each bicycle has been painted with a color called “Huxi Yellow” as well as the characters “Chongqing University Huxi Campus” and a serial number on it. Thus students nicknamed them “Xiao Huang” (Little Yellow).
Tian Ming said at the ceremony that handing out free bicycles is a public service activity, aiming at reusing those abandoned bicycles and providing travel tools for students with financial difficulties, giving them more convenience on campus. He hoped that each student who has acquired a bicycle “Xiao Huang” would take good care of it and hand it over to someone from next grade after he or she graduates, maintaining and carrying forward the “Spirit of Saving” and “Spirit of Caring for Each Other” of CQU.
It’s burning hot at noon and students who had received a bicycle were also very high-spirited, with their hearts filled with warmth. Li Tianfu, a student from the School of Mechanical Engineering, said that he was excited to receive a free bicycle and he was deeply grateful for the help from the university. Meanwhile, he suggested that more publicity should be given before determining the list of free bicycle receivers. Students could submit applications, and teachers together with students organizations could help to confirm and make a decision. Thus, more students with financial problems can be helped and bicycles can be better used. A student with a surname Ye from the School of Power Engineering was thrilled to show his newly-got bicycle to his fellow students, and he expressed his admiration for the concept of “saving resources and caring for students”. This is a concept being promoted at CQU and he hoped that it would be carried forward and further developed in the future.
Deng Wenzhuo reminded students that if there are certain problems about their “Xiao Huang” later in use, they can go to a bicycle repairs and maintenance shop at No. 3 building in Bamboo Garden for free. Bicycle “Xiao Huang” is not only a beautiful sight on the Campus, but also an embodiment of the environmental protection concept. Therefore, they should be regarded more as a campus culture than mere travel tools. If you have no more use for something, you should try to deal with it properly, selling it or giving it to someone else.
Wang Yuhong, Luo Xiao, as well as all the dorm supervisors attended the handing out ceremony.
